Undoubtedly, since the release of Starfield in September last year, it has been one of the most controversial games ever. There is a clear division about this game even among the studio’s own gaming audience. Many fans of games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout came out disappointed from their experience with Starfield. And now, over a year after the game’s release and with the release of its first expansion, the studio’s design lead spoke out in an interview, mentioning several important points, one of which is their deliberate choice to appeal to a different or new fan base.
A New Title Joins the List
In an interview with Game Radar+, Mr. Emil Pagliarulo stated that Starfield “is a game with a unique status,” meaning that it has its own style separate from Fallout and Elder Scrolls, and for Bethesda, Starfield holds the same importance and relevance as these two games.
We made a new title from scratch, and a unique experience on home consoles. I’m not saying Starfield is better or worse than any other game, it’s just different from what we offer.
And of course, Pagliarulo also added that Starfield is different from the studio’s other games as it appeals to a somewhat different audience. “Starfield simply developed its own fan base, which by the way, is large and continues to grow.” He also highlighted Bethesda’s evolution in developing their games and their connection to them, starting as a studio known for one series, then with Fallout, these two series became Bethesda. And now Starfield joins this list.
Previously, Bethesda was the Elder Scrolls studio. Then it was the studio associated with Elder Scrolls and Fallout. And now it has become the studio of Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield, the three big BGS games.
It is worth mentioning, as previously stated by director Todd Howard, that they have big plans coming for the game, starting with the available Shattered Space expansion, followed by annual story expansions for the game, which are clearly set to continue for a long time.
