Storyline

The storyline of Funko Fusion revolves around a conflict between Freddy and Eddy. Throughout your journey, you will witness the destruction caused by Eddy in the seven worlds featured in our game. Your role is to play 5 stages in each world and try to eliminate enemies by playing with various characters inspired by several different works. The game’s story is not the main focus but serves as a driving force to push the events forward and make you strive for a specific goal. Additionally, it does not directly adapt the stories of the works from which the worlds are borrowed but mostly uses the world to tell a story related to the game within that world.

Gameplay

As mentioned earlier, our game is primarily an action-adventure game, a third-person perspective game where you fight enemies using two types of weapons: firearms and melee, throughout your journey playing with many characters from different worlds in 7 main worlds. The mission design is not a standout feature of our game because the nature of the missions themselves is mostly conventional and repetitive. You will accompany a vehicle, kill a number of enemies, rescue prisoners, and other tasks that are never innovative. During these missions, there are also puzzles or obstacles that you must solve to progress in the stage. While this aspect was initially simplistic, as you progress in the game, you will notice an improvement in this area. The game tries to introduce some Metroidvania elements by finding something specific that may help you overcome an obstacle you saw at the beginning of the stage, or even the best part of switching between characters for their different abilities. This aspect of solving obstacles and puzzles was the saving grace for level design.

As for the combat mechanics, the shooting mechanics are not bad, they are acceptable to some extent. There is also weapon variety based on the selected character, and the game, in general, is not overly challenging, especially after the massive update that was released for the game, which helped in fine-tuning many aspects. Additionally, there are boss fights in the game, and unfortunately, the fights are tedious and not enjoyable or innovative at all. There is a repetition in the use of some ideas, and whether fighting regular enemies or bosses, the camera in both cases disrupts the combat. It is annoyingly close and obstructs your view, especially if you play with a character with long hair. Therefore, the game should have widened the field of view further.

Artistic and Technical Level

Funko Fusion may not be visually captivating at first glance. While some textures and details are good, and the game excels in the design of the worlds from which it draws inspiration, overall, the graphics level is modest. The problem is that the game does not perform well in return, as on the PC, the game noticeably suffers, especially if there are a few effects, at which point the game may drop to 30 frames or even less. These are not the only technical problems of the game, as there are issues with the movement of characters and enemies, in addition to being filled with technical errors that spoil the experience. Therefore, it is evident from this level that Funko Fusion is a rushed release. As for the audio level, there are, of course, melodies from the works from which it is inspired, which are mostly suitable to a large extent.

Pros

  • Some puzzle or obstacle ideas are well-designed
  • Faithfulness to original materials in world design

Cons

  • Tedious boss fights
  • Modest mission design
  • Poor camera
  • Numerous technical errors
  • Poor and unstable performance

Game Rating out of 10 – 4.5

4.5

Although the homage to beloved works like Jurassic World or The Thing may seem like an attractive idea to many players, Funko Fusion does not deliver this experience well. Additionally, the game is filled with technical issues that ruin any attempt to immerse yourself in the experience.
