A recent study has revealed that 53% of gamers prefer single-player video games, especially older age groups. While the study shows that younger gamers are more inclined towards multiplayer games, this percentage significantly decreases when reaching the mid-twenties.
This study was conducted by MIDiA Research, analyzing data from gamers in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Poland, Turkey, and South Africa, collected between 2023 and 2024.
Older Gamers Prefer Single-Player Video Games
The study shows that gamers over 25 years old are more likely to prefer single-player video games, while younger gamers prefer multiplayer games like Fortnite. The study attributes this to several factors, including time constraints and life responsibilities that make it harder for older gamers to keep up with the demands of multiplayer games.
Despite the popularity of single-player games favored by most gamers, the study points out that multiplayer games still generate greater profits through in-game purchases known as “microtransactions.” This explains why many companies focus on developing multiplayer games in recent years, even those known for developing single-player games like BioWare and Bethesda.
